Travelling by Campervan in Africa
We’ve been on a few roadtrips through Southern Africa, across Namibia, Botswana, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Here’s a selection of our favourite memories.
Soweto. An infamous suburb of Johannesburg, Soweto not only has an amazing history (one particular former resident being Nelson Mandela) it is also ALIVE with colours and culture. Driving North West of Johannesburg across the Wheat belt towards Gaborone, the landscape opens up and you feel like you’re constantly chasing the horizon. Hitchhikers are a comon sight in Africa, even in the most desolate of areas.
Slums too are a common sight across South Africa. Although the country has come along way in the past 20 years, it is hard not to notice the ever-widening gap between the fabulously rich and the desperately poor. One of the most spectacular cities in the World, Cape Town is gaining poplarity for it’s bohemian culture and beachside beauty. With Table Mountain looking over every part of the city, it’s hard not to feel overwhelmed by the place.
Camps Bay just out of the City Centre of Cape Town really is stunning at sunset. The Landscape of Southern Africa changes continuously as you driver the higways. From tropical ancient forests to sparse moon-like deserts, even the shittiest camera can make this place look good! World Famous Kruger National Park is teeming with wildlife. Elephants, buffalo, Zebra, Giraffes, rhino, crocodile, hippo, lions, springbok – you name it – and it will cross the road in front of you! Around 5 hours from Johannesburg, this incredible reserve is something that every human should endeavour to see!
The speed limit in the 20,000sq km park is 50km/hr – and for good reason. Animals are everywhere and often on the road!
There’s a lot of speculation surrounding safety in Africa, but after spending a couple of weeks touring you’ll soon discover:
- The Roads and Highways are extremely well built, easy to navigate and well signed
- Most Hostels (particularly in South Africa) are also campgrounds – so you can park and sleep in your campervan in a secure location with access to all amenities – for a reduced rate!
- The people are so friendly, helpful and funny! The best part of your experience in Africa will no doubt be the diversity of people, the excitement of their culture, the controversy surrounding their history and their breathtaking landscapes!
- Petrol is relatively cheap – and comparable to prices in Australia and New Zealand. Food and alcohol, cigarettes and accommodation are also well-priced. You should easily be able to eat like a King and drink like a Viking on a minimal budget.
- Driving in Africa is very similar to the UK and Australia. Driving is on the left hand side of the road and road rules are similar. African drivers have developed a few nifty tricks for overtaking which you will discover whilst on your roadtrips. Drivers and passengers who exercise common sense while driving will have no worries at all while navigating African roads.
